anechoic: /ˌanɪˈkəʊɪk/ Free from echo. E.g.‘an anechoic chamber’

gurgle: /ˈɡɜːɡl/ to make a sound like water flowing quickly through a narrow space. E.g. Water gurgled through the pipes. The water made a gurgling noise as it ran down the drain. a gurgling stream.
 
whine that… to complain in an annoying, crying voice. E.g. Stop whining! ‘I want to go home,’ whined Toby.

cower/ˈkaʊə(r) to bend low and/or move backwards because you are frightened. E.g. A gun went off and people cowered behind walls and under tables. The dog whimpered (cried softly)and cowered at his feet.

lined: with a thin layer of material covering the inside surface. E.g. a lined skirt

buffer: a barrier which gives protection from something.  A thing or person that reduces a shock or protects somebody/something against difficulties. E.g. Peacekeepers have been sent in to establish a buffer zone between the rival forces.

meshmaterial made of threads of plastic rope or wire that are twisted together like a net. Sp. red, malla. E.g. The windows are covered with a fine wire mesh.

upsetting: making you feel unhappy, anxious or annoyed. E.g. an upsetting experience. She finds the divorce too upsetting to talk about.

deprive somebody/something of something: ​to prevent somebody from having or doing something, especially something important . E.g.They were imprisoned and deprived of their basic rights. Why should you deprive yourself of such simple pleasures?

sensory deprivation: a situation in which the senses are not stimulated at all. 

business as usual: said when things are continuing as they always do.

malfunction: failure of a machine, etc. to work correctly. E.g. The drug caused a malfunction in the brain. There was no evidence of technical malfunction. 

aural: /ˈɔːrəl/ connected with hearing and listening. E.g. aural and visual images.  aural comprehension tests.

hammer: to hit something hard many times, especially so that it makes a loud noise. E.g. Someone was hammering at the door.

plunged into darkness: suddenly be in the dark. E.g. I was plunges into darkness.

soothing: /ˈsuːðɪŋ/ that makes somebody who is anxious, upset, etc. feel calmer. E.g. a soothing voice

jangle your nerves: make you feel annoyed or nervous. E.g. She was suddenly wide awake, her nerves jangling.

strain: to make an effort to do something, using all your mental or physical strength. E.g. People were straining to see what was going on.

thumpthe sound of something heavy hitting the ground or another object. E.g. There was a thump as the truck hit the bank.

be going overtime: working much more/faster than usual.  E.g. My ears were going overtime.

scalp: the skin that covers the part of the head where the hair grows. E.g. A dry scalp can lead to dandruff. 

scrape: /skreɪp/ to make an unpleasant noise by rubbing against a hard surface; to make something do this. Sp. raspar. E.g. I could hear his pen scraping across the paper. Bushes scraped against the car windows. Don't scrape your chairs on the floor.
