when it comes down to it: when you get to the essence", "when all is said and done", "at the end of the day", "when push comes to shove".
E.g. They were, for the most part, capable of taking care of themselves when it came down to it.
There were two candidates when it came down to it. Sp. Había dos candidatos cuando llegó el momento. I knew when it came down to it, you'd always want to go back to work. Sp.
Sabia que cuando llegara el momento, siempre querrías volver a trabajar
