Do Ex 9

cochlear: /ˈkɒkliə/ in or of the cochlea. Sp. coclear. E.g. cochlear implant     (medicine)    Sp. implante coclear.

ill-conceived: /ˌɪl kənˈsiːvd/ badly planned or designed. Sp. mal concebido.

E.g.

The whole ill-conceived scheme was finally abandoned.     

Someone had the ill-conceived idea of mixing the different age groups, with disastrous results.


repulsive: /rɪˈpʌlsɪv/ causing a feeling of strong dislike; very unpleasant. Synonym: disgusting.

E.g.

a repulsive sight/smell/habit     

What a repulsive man!


ravishing: very beautiful SYN stunning.

E.g.

She looked ravishing. 

 a ravishing smile


not be/come up to scratch

up to scratch      to not be good enough. Up to the required standard; satisfactory.   

E.g.

 Her German was not up to scratch

She told me my work wasn't up to scratch

 

utterly: completely: 

E.g.

It's utterly ridiculous.


impractical:  not sensible or possible for practical reasons  

E.g.

The road toll scheme was dismissed as impractical.  

James was a foolish man, full of impractical plans.


fish walker:


 

craft: to make something using special skills, especially with your hands. Sp. crear, hacer, manufacturar.


set the world alight ( also set the world on fire) do something remarkable or sensational. To be very successful and admired by other people.  

E.g. 

the team includes great players who could set the world alight

He's never going to set the world on fire with his paintings.

 

a stroke of genius: an outstandingly brilliant and original idea. "the new piece of propaganda was a stroke of genius."


a sliver of sth: a very small, thin piece of something, usually broken off something larger. Sp. pedacito.

E.g.

a sliver of glass 

Just a sliver of cake for me, please - I shouldn't really be having any. 


speck: a very small spot; a small piece of dirt, etc.

E.g.

The ship was now just a speck in the distance. (Sp. punto)
There isn't a speck of dust anywhere in the house. (Sp. mota)


Do Ex 10

undemanding: not needing a lot of effort or thought. Sp. [person] poco exigente; [job] que exige poco esfuerzo.

E.g.

an undemanding job

 

underway:  happening now  

E.g.

The project is already well underway.  

Your peace will be shattered when the tourist season gets underway (=starts).

When we arrived the show was already underway.  Sp.     Cuando llegamos el concierto ya estaba en progreso.


arrangements: plans and preparations that you must make so that something can happen. Sp. planes  (=preparations) preparativos.

E.g.

Have you made all your travel arrangements?

what are the arrangements for your holiday? Sp. ¿qué plan or planes tienes para las vacaciones?
